6 Nations Predictions - Week 3

Kendal Rugby Union Football Club Ltd
News from the Board – January 2008

  • The Board continues with the difficult task of managing the Club’s Finances. Despite an extremely successful Season on the Field and at the Bar, the Club’s Finances continue to be in an extremely precarious position. The Board continues to examine ways to increase revenue and cut costs, and is extremely grateful to the many dedicated volunteers who assist in this. The Supporters Club, the Sales and Marketing and Social Fund continue to provide invaluable financial support

  • The Board is currently in process of finalising a Budget for next Financial Year commencing on 1st May. This includes planning for a return to National League status, which hopefully will happen, but this will involve greatly increased travelling costs which will have to be funded

  • The Wayne Broadley Fund.  Wayne continues his treatment and his hydrotherapy and is having two regular swimming sessions per week which the physio is pleased with

  • Members will recall discussion which has taken place on a proposed access to the “Field of Dreams Millennium” site which involved the widening of the lane down the side of the Club and leasing a strip of land from the Club, which would provide the Club with much needed injection of finances. The Board has learned that the developer involved with the “Field of Dreams Millennium” proposal had identified an alternative access to the site through Mintsfeet Estate. The access down the lane at the side of the Club now looks like being a non-starter

  • House and Ground report. The Director reported that he had negotiated a permanent cover on the video tower from a prominent Sponsor, John Uttley of SBS(Cumbria)Ltd. The Sponsor is thanked for his invaluable help with the video tower structure

  • On the condition of the 2nd XV pitch the Director reported that he was to examine the feasibility of providing floodlighting to the Millennium Field to relieve pressure on the 2nd XV pitch and provide additional training facilities

  • The Director reported that he had arranged for a meter to be placed on the electricity system to establish the true consumption. The Club currently incurs bills of up to £900 per month during the season. One “wag” thinks that the Heinz factory is connected to the Club system

  • Rugby Report.  The Director reported on the continued success of the Season, and the healthy state of the playing squads, Junior and Senior. The 1st XV are continuing to fly high and the 2nd XV were continuing to make progress and play well. Competition for places in the 2nd XV was a healthy sign. The 3rd XV were having some difficulty with fixtures and cancellations but the spirit there is good and an application to join the Miller Homes League next Season was being made. At this stage in the Season, eyes are obviously on the Season to come and the Director and the Coaching staff are looking at strengthening the 1st XV squad with overseas players going home. This approach applies through all Senior and Junior sides and a fuller report of this will appear next month

  • Sales and Marketing. A membership questionnaire was handed out at the Huddersfield game. The information will be then used for Membership marketing for next Season. It is planned that the Membership book be ready for distribution by mid June. Membership numbers have declined in recent years and the Sales and Marketing Group are anxious to establish a Membership drive as a way to increasing numbers. Gatekeepers: It was agreed that the gate must be manned at least two hours before kick-off and 30 minutes afterwards. As mentioned last month this crucial job is provided by volunteers and as many as possible are sought. Anyone willing to give time, please contact Ron Hayes

  • As mentioned earlier in the Season, John Hutton is to stand down as Press Secretary at the end of the Season. The position will then be vacant. Any volunteers?

  • The Social Committee has donated a new flat screen TV for the Lounge and a new big screen and projector of the Hall. These were being fitted before the end of January

  • It has been agreed to hold a fund Raising Event in the form of a Celebration Ball on the 20th June at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal. Ticket prices to be £35.00 each. Book your tickets with Richard Berrie to avoid disappointment

  • Sponsorship is virtually fully in place till the end of the Season, except for the Cumbria Cup Semi-final which the 1st XV play at home on 5th April if we beat Workington on 22nd March
