Kendal 15 Glossop 7

Another Sunday and another call to Kendal colts to pull up their socks and roll up their sleeves for yet another tough opponent to face, this time Glossop.
The day started in a strange mood as the warm up seemed lack lustre and dull. There were questions being asked as to whether the lads were up for this one today, and with several players still unavailable for one reason or another the prospects didn’t look good.
But as in previous weeks cometh the hour cometh the man, or men in this case. Not one of the team could be questioned about their effort, commitment and determination.
The game started with both teams trying to access each other, with most of the play taking place between the two ten metre lines for about twenty minutes then things started to happen. Good hard defence by Kendal kept Glossop out, then Kendal started to try and open the opposition up with George, Dan and Ben winning good line out ball and with Ben Robinson returning from Sedburgh to join the rest of the backs good angles were made and gaps created. From a break down the right and from the resulting ruck Ben Petts drove over for an unconverted try in the corner giving Kendal a 5 – 0 lead.
With half time approaching Glossop cleared their lines with a kick deep into Kendal’s 22, Luke Jacobs gathered and as he cleared there was a late tackle and then a brawl with 16 – 20 players involved (NOT the type of discipline you expect from young men). Kendal had the plenty reversed for the retaliation and Glossop kicked to the corner for a five yard line-out to put Kendal under real pressure. Kendal then turned the line-out over. Cleared their lines the sighed with relief as the half time whistle blew.
The second half began with Kendal under pressure for Glossop throwing the ball around and not their fists, a missed tackle in mid field led to Glossop scoring a converted try under the posts taking the to 5 – 7. With both sides settled and playing good old fashioned rugby and giving their all, Kendal’s No.8 Dan Boardley broke his nose and took no further part in the game.
With Kendal starting to get the upper hand and some outstanding rucking by the Kendal pack, Glossop were penalised for coming in from the side. Jacobs calmly kicking the penalty to give back the lead to Kendal 8 – 7.
From the kick off Kendal drove forward with Ben Petts having one of his best games for Kendal, supported by Jack Grizzely and the rest of the forwards. A scrum was awarded to Kendal five metres in field just inside the 22, from scrummage to ruck on the 15, Jack Walker saw a gap on the blind side which he took and scampered over under the posts for a try, Luke Jacobs again added the two points to now give Kendal a 15 – 7 lead with ten minutes remaining.
Glossop came back trying everything to break the Kendal defence, but Kendal stood strong and showed the heart and pride which had earlier been asked for resulting in yet another injury to one of Kendal’s hard working forwards Jack Grizzely (shoulder), who now could be out for eight weeks. Not long after the final whistle went to the great relief of Kendal.
Another well deserved win. Well done Lads.
