Kendal 19 – Chester 18

Kendal senior colts travelled away to Chester for their first away game of the season with a few key players still missing. From the start the Kendal players knew they were in for another hard game, with some big hits going in from both sides. Kendal had the smaller of packs, but dominated the rucks and mauls.
With well executed kicking out of hands from Jacobs and precise line outs from Morton it was not long before Kendal scored their first try; a textbook catch and drive from a line out, second row Jack Greasley claiming the touchdown, with Jacobs knocking it over for the extra 2 points.
Chester came back fighting and after 15 minutes of good rugby, Kendal’s flanker Denny had a disagreement with the ref from which Chester received a penalty giving them an easy 3 points.
7 – 3 to Kendal at the turnaround and the coaching staff were not mixing their words in the break. All fired up, the Kendal side came out fighting with both props Housego and Kershaw making some good yards and the second row partnership of Boardley and Pett. With gaps starting to show in the Chester side, scrum half Ben Craghill went alone from 25 metres out to score under the sticks. Jacobs who had just taken a big knock missed the sitter! Kendal 12 – Chester 3
By now the fitness in the Kendal side was showing, with the forwards not getting to the breakdowns. Jack Chester realised that to get through the Kendal defence the only way was to go round them, and scored twice in succession in the corner. Lucky for Kendal, the Chester kicker missed the kick by a mile both times. With Nigel Pearson (Coach) now about to pop after shouting too much, young Housego was taken off after an injury to his thumb so new boy Reid was chucked into the mixer.
From the restart a great catch from Boardley took Kendal back into the Chester’s 22. With a quick ball coming from a maul, Kendal’s backs release full back Theo Pavli to score in the corner, Jacobs kicked the ball over to take his side back into the lead, Kendal 19 – Chester 13.
With about 8 minutes to go the Kendal side took their foot off the gas. With quick hands along the backs’ line the Chester winger helped by half the of Kendal’s forwards scored in the corner. Two minutes to go and it was down to the Chester’s kicker, who just missed the left post, which was a big relief to the 150 travelling supporters.
