Kendal Colts 5 – Caldy 0

Sunday, 2 September 2007

Kendal Senior Colts opened their season with a closely fought victory over Caldy at Mint Bridge on Sunday.
Now playing in the Halbro Senior Colts League A they defeated Caldy by five points to nil. In a tight game in which both sides cancelled each other out, scoring opportunities were few and far between with both defences remaining solid. Kendal received their first scoring opportunity in the twenty-third minute when Caldy were penalised for piling in at the side of a ruck, unfortunately stand-off Luke Jacobs long range attempt at goal fell short.

Caldy’s only scoring chance came fourteen minutes later when Kendal were penalised for handling at a ruck but their penalty attempt at goal was wide of the posts. A second Jacobs’s penalty attempt ten minutes into the second half was to the right of the posts. But Kendal finally broke the deadlock with a well thought out attack midway through the half. Backrow forward Phil Whitfield took the attack to Caldy charging the ball up field from where a neat cross field kick, unlocking the Caldy defence, was collected
by flanker Jack Walker and he sprinted in at the corner to score an unconverted try and ultimately the decisive score.

Kendal still had work to do in the final few minutes as they worked hard in defence to hold onto to their narrow lead and prevent the larger Caldy forwards from crossing their try line and secure a well earned victory.

The Colts play their next game tomorrow, 9 September away at Chester and are at home on Sunday, 23 September to Altrincham Kersal.
