Waterloo 2nds 5 Kendal 2nds 18 The seconds got their season off to a winning start in a closely contested opener against Waterloo. Neither side was rarely able to dominate, but sustained early pressure with good play from Joel Housego and Dan Reid resulted in a penalty for killing the ball, successfully converted by Luke Jacobs.
With a first taste of senior rugby, scrum half Aaron McGill was industrious at the breakdown, but Kendal fell behind to a well worked try when 'loo created an extra man out wide to go over, the conversion was missed. Without any sleight of hand, or visit to a joke shop, No 8 Rob Quarry had to leave the fray for blood (blue blood... he's Scottish ya nae), Jools Holland coming onto the flank as blood sub. Using the strong wind well, Luke Jacobs kept the Kendal pack going forward, and with Keil Tomlinson ruling the front of the lineout, pressure was constantly applied to the opposition throw in. Jacobs was again on target with a penalty. Gareth Gore, playing with his trademark physicality and industry, won turnover ball in the centre of the park, for Brett Ashley to pick a superb line, to scream over from 30 metres out, converted by Jacobs. Half time found Kendal 13-5 up, playing against the wind, and showing a collective desire and youthful energy, to repel sustained 'loo probings, Jason Donaghue and Will Morten to the fore. At this stage Waterloo's discipline evaporated. Kendal visibly seized the initiative to patiently work upfield, Dave Sparks and Jamie Postlethwaite prominent. An impressive spurt from Nick Michilini set up an attacking scrum which Rob Quarry controlled well to power over, the extras were missed. Waterloo rallied and, but for some excellent clearing kicks from Ashley Forrest at acute angles, and evergreen Nutter maintaining width, would have surely scored, but the evenly balanced game ended with Kendal back on the attack.
