Hull Ionians 23 Kendal 10

The nerves which we all were feeling after the previous week’s result were soon dispelled as We got off to a good start. Bully’s words were clear in the dressing room “ there’s only one way to get rid of the taste of last week” and the team set about its task.

For the first 8 minutes it was all Kendal with Ionians unable to get out of their own half. We drove into their 22 only to knock on but from the scrum Goughie won it back again only for us to turn over and James Ferguson was able to relieve the pressure with a long clearing kick into our half. The game stopped for treatment to one of their players and as usual the water carriers came on. A feature of the modern game these. When I played we were lucky to get a segment of orange at half time! However everybody duly refreshed the game continued, mostly in the middle portion of the field.

A hand in a ruck led to the first score of the game for Ionians a penalty by James Ferguson who was a thorn in our side for the whole match with his long kicking game. From another penalty he kicked to the corner and a text book move allowed right wing Stephen Slingsby to power through a gap in the middle for a try in the 21st minute.

We rallied immediately and Rob Aloe broke and put through a little grubber for Possie to chase. Their defender appeared to miss the touchdown and Possie dropped on it but it wasn’t given. On the left wing we tried a “mint cake” move but a foot on the touchline ended that break. Next it was our forwards turn and a driving maul was collapsed 3 metres short of the line. Their pack were duly warned and the penalty given. Do we take the penalty or do we go for another drive? The penalty was the choice but unfortunately we missed and went into the break 8 – 3 down.

The second half set off in much the same way with both packs driving well but Oli Marns was becoming more of an influence for Ionians in the centre. A move from the centre took play deep into our 22 and from the next plays Chris Cusack the number eight got the touch down after the forward drive. This was followed by a short bout of fisticuffs which saw Chris Cusack and Goughie yellow carded. Rugby players wear numbers because they can’t always be identified by their dental records.

The ebb and flow of the game led to a try apiece. Oli Marne scored after pressure in mid field then Leeroy scored for us after a good spell of forward pressure in the Ionians 22. With the scores at 18 – 10 we continued to press but their midfield defence was tight. Mark Ireland made a beautiful break up the middle but was held short of the line by Joe Wright the fullback. The saying that in rugby there are piano shifters and piano players is true and Mark Ireland knows a tune or two. With Rob Aloes injury Mark was moved to 10 and Voorts came on in the centre. Westarted to get some go forward ball and chased the result but in doing so we left ourselves open at the back and Stephen Slingsby was able to bag a second try and seal the game for Ionians. A good entertaining game.
