Matt Charters - an outstanding display

KENDAL 37 – WATERLOO 8

Kendal entertained bottom side Waterloo at Mint Bridge on Saturday and a large Easter crowd through the sleet & hail saw an entertaining game in which eight tries were scored.

Kendal opened the scoring when hooker Allen Martindale finished an excellent break off a scrum by No.8 Matt Charters which was taken on by prop Billy Coxon and centre Dan Stephens, replacing the injured Rob Aloe in the centre, in the fourth minute. The try was converted by Scott from wide out.

Waterloo put their first points on the board in the tenth minute when fullback James O’Brien successfully kicked a penalty after Kendal had been penalised for diving in at a ruck.

Two minutes later and right wing John Ladell sailed in to score Kendal’s second try.

However seven minutes later Waterloo worked quick ball and fullback O’Brien hit the line to out pace the Kendal defence and score an unconverted try.

Three minutes later and Kendal claimed their third try when once again Kendal flanker Gary Hodgson split the midfield defence to link with second row Gareth Gore who managed to move the ball out to winger Jamie Postlethwaite, he injected pace into the move to allow centre Matt Gracie to score an unconverted try.

Fullback Chris Park scored Kendal’s bonus point try in the thirty-third minute after Kendal had sustained pressure on the Waterloo try line and then swiftly shifted the ball wide right to create the opportunity on the right touch line.

Early in the second half Postlethwaite was the beneficiary to extend Kendal’s lead to 22 – 8.

A very tenacious Waterloo defence limited Kendal to only two more tries. The first was scored by centre Dan Stephens after good work by Hodgson who was well supported by fullback Chris Park.

Kendal’s final try was scored by second row Reece Tomlinson who benefited from some excellent build up play to gallop over the try line.

Waterloo who never gave up the game came extremely close to scoring at the end but were denied by some excellent last ditch Kendal tac
