BROADSTREET 37 – KENDAL 45
Kendal made the very long journey down the M6 to play Broadstreet and played a full part in a very entertaining game. Kendal were in total control throughout the first half and had secured the four try bonus point by half-time.
Unfortunately Kendal suffered two serious injuries during the first half. Andrew Quarry dislocated his left shoulder and flanker Craig Wilson broke an ankle.
Kendal opened the scoring in the sixteenth minute when flying left wing Jamie Postlethwaite scored an unconverted try after right wing John Ladell with his pace had set up the opportunity.
A clever kick through into the Kendal twenty-two was not dealt with by the visiting defence and the awkward bounce allowed left wing Nick Thatcher to touch down in the corner to level the scores in the twenty-first minute.
No.8 Nick McKain, playing his last game for Kendal, created and scored Kendal’s second try when he powered through the Broadstreet defence. Standoff Mike Scott converted for Kendal. Standoff Dan Richards pulled three points back for the homeside when he kicked a penalty in the twenty-seventh minute.
Two sublime tries in the space of two minutes secured the four try bonus point for Kendal, firstly brilliant passing allowed centre Rob Aloe to coast in under the posts and then second row Gareth Gore galloped in to score. More was to come moments before halftime when Postlethwaite raced in to score his second. Scott converted all three tries to give Kendal an 8 – 33 halftime lead.
Broadstreet however started the second half all guns blazing and scored an excellent try through flanker Nigel Mukarati which was converted by Richards who added a penalty to score line five minutes later to put Broadstreet back in the game at 18 – 33.
But in the fifty-second minute scrumhalf broke clear and raced up the left touchline to score and unconverted try in the corner to give Kendal some breathing space. Broadstreet came right back at Kendal with replacement Jordan Simpson scoring their third try. Two tries in the final three minutes from Broadstreet deservedly gave them a four try bonus point unfortunately with a final score line of 37 – 45 they fell just a point shy of claiming a losing bonus point as well.
