Kendal 29 Fylde 16 Kendal hosted old rivals Fylde in the local derby game at Mint Bridge on Saturday.
After an early Mike Scott penalty gave Kendal the lead Fylde levelled the scores through a Thomas Barlow penalty when Kendal were penalised at a ruck in the sixteenth minute. A second Scott penalty gave Kendal the lead again which was extended in the eighteenth minute when Scott dropped a goal after excellent forward driving play from a penalty lineout. Kendal capitalised on the sin-binning of Fylde scrumhalf Martin Wallwork in the twenty-ninth minute by scoring the games first try. Flanker Garry Holmes powered through the Fylde defence, beating his brother Alan in the process, to touchdown for an unconverted try when good lineout work provided the platform. After a failed drop goal attempt Fylde did pull three points back when Barlow kicked a second penalty. The scores remained 14-6 at half-time. Scott & Barlow exchanged penalties early in the second half before Mike Scott was the benefactor of a Fylde error, he latched onto a loose Fylde pass as they tried to run the ball out of their own twenty-two to score besides the posts, he converted his own try. Fylde's first real attack of the second half was interrupted by foul play for which winger was shown a yellow card. Fylde opted for the scrum and after superb forward driving play second row Alistair Atkinson touched down for a score converted by Thomas. Forcing the play Fylde spilled the ball which was hacked back down field firstly by flanker Gary Hodgson and then Scott. Scrumhalf James Gough, chasing hard just managed to get a fingertip touchdown before the ball rolled dead. Scott failed with the difficult conversion attempt but, no matter, Kendal had secured a well earned victory over their old rivals.
After an outstanding game, Mike Scott was rightly voted Man of the Match. |
