CALDY 61 – KENDAL 6
A weakened Kendal side, due to an ever growing injury list and unavailability, made the trip down onto the Wirral to play third placed Caldy and made a good start in the opening minutes of the game through excellent ball retention and control of possession and turned it into points when standoff Mike Scott slotted a drop goal in the fifth minute.
But as soon as Kendal lost possession Caldy capitalised and following a couple of 5-metre scrums on the Kendal try line Caldy scored with flanker Dickinson getting the touchdown.
Mark Ireland – the ever reliable goal kicker for Kendal this season – missed with two early attempts but successfully kicked his third attempt in the twentieth minute pulling three points back for Kendal.
Unfortunately the Kendal defence was caught napping two minutes later and the leagues top try scorer; second row Paul Arnold was able to stroll in under the posts to score his nineteenth try of the season.
Five minutes later and No8 Smithson was completing a superb flowing move downfield. The twenty fifth minute of the game saw Caldy score their fourth try when Arnold’s second row partner Nugent galloped away to score beneath the posts.
Centre Roberts scored a fifth try just before the break to complete the first half scoring and give the home side a 35-6 lead at halftime.
Kendal stuck at their task as best as they could but it was obvious to most that Caldy simply had more pace in every position than Kendal and they used that to there great advantage throughout the game.
Caldy scored four more tries in the second with standoff Richard Vasey successfully converting eight of their nine tries.
Kendal did have a period of play in the second half where they threw the kitchen sink at the Caldy try line but twice they were held up over the try line by the indomitable Caldy defence.
