KENDAL 46 – WESTOE 10
On a glorious winter's afternoon, Kendal produced a performance to match.
After trailing to an early try finished by winger James Walker, and conversion kicked by standoff Daniel Rayson, who also added a penalty to the visitors' score line in the tenth minute to give them a 10 nil lead, Kendal woke up.
Ian Voortman
Firstly Captain and centre Ian Voortman, who had an outstanding match, blasted through the Westoe defence on a forty metre run to the try line , which was converted by fullback Mark Ireland, and then eight minutes later, with the Kendal pack beginning to establish themselves on the match, they were awarded a penalty try when Westoe deliberately pulled down a driving maul very close to their own try line. Again Ireland added the extras to give Kendal the lead for the first time, and he extended Kendal's lead with a penalty in the twenty-eighth minute.
A second Voortman try followed seven minutes later. Excellent build up play from the forwards with Nick McKain and Gareth Gore especially involved created the opportunity for Rob Aloe to provide the final for his centre partner to score. Once again Ireland's boot added the conversion for a half-time score of 24-10.
However Kendal had some scramble defence to carry out to prevent Westoe from scoring just before the break. Scrumhalf James Gough chased back wonderfully well to make the all important try saving tackle.
A second Ireland penalty kick in the second half further extended Kendal's lead, before they were again called upon to defend their try line for several minutes, to prevent Westoe from gaining a foot hold back on the game and a swing in momentum.
Kendal saw off the danger without conceding a point and secured the four try bonus point in the sixty-fourth minute.
Excellent linking play from No.8 Craig Wilson and flanker Gary Hodgson provided the chance for centre Rob Aloe to score, which he took with both hands to score a converted try.
Scrumhalf James Gough put the result beyond any doubt when he burrowed his way over the line in the seventy-second minute. Remarkably Ireland missed with his fairly straight forward conversion attempt.
Replacement flanker Garry Holmes wrapped up the scoring when he burst from a ruck to power his way over the try line from 20 metres. Ireland made no mistake with his conversion to make the final score 46-10.
