Luctonians 90 (31) Kendal 20 (8)
Kendal ended their season with a tough away fixture to Luctonians, who had been in the hunt for a promotion play-off place, until consecutive defeats over the previous weekends, against the league's top two teams. Kendal's preparations were again disrupted by injuries. A number of players found themselves in unaccustomed positions, with wings Kris Bratton at fullback, and Jamie Postlethwaite at scrum half, plus a back row of hooker Mattie Houghton and second row Liam Hayton on the flanks, with Gary Holmes at No.8. Luctonians took the lead after just two minutes, turning over Kendal possession from a ruck in their own half, and a long run by right wing John Morris, was finished by left wing Jimmy Norris. Morris converted for a 7v0 lead. Kendal's defence continued to be stretched, but five minutes later outside half Mark Ireland narrowed the gap with a long range penalty 7v3 Luctonians extended their lead after twelve minutes, when the Kendal defence failed to deal with a kick through, and Luctonians No.8 Paul Hulland was on hand to gather the loose ball and go over for a try 12v3. Further tries followed from fullback Will Hodnett and Norris, after weak tackling, to extend the Luctonians lead to 26v3. Kendal re-grouped, and a penalty into the twenty two led to a strong drive from the resulting line out, from which Richard Harryman emerged with the try. 26v8. Luctonians finished the half camped in the Kendal twenty-two. After an outbreak of fighting resulted in a warning to both captains, Luctonians outside half Will Burton scored their fifth try with the last move of the half for a half time lead of 31v8. Luctonians started the second half with a try by flanker Ben James 36v8 A break from inside his own half by Luctonians second row Daniel Smith, saw him chip the ball into the Kendal twenty-two. Again the Kendal defence was unable to deal with the kick, and he was on hand to score. 41v8 Kendal came back into the game, and strong work from the forwards set up a good position in the Luctonians twenty two. Despite the ball seeming to be lost, Garry Holmes was rewarded for a hard working afternoon, with a long arcing run to score in the right hand corner 41v13 Poor tackling let second row Smith in for a second try, converted by scrum half Brett Prior 48v13 After a quarter of an hour Kendal scored again, when Ian Voortman anticipated a Luctonians pass, to intercept in his own half, and had the pace to beat the defence, 48v20, with the conversion from Mark Ireland. A mixture of strong support play from the Luctonians, plus fragile defence from Kendal, led to tries in quick succession from flankers Barnaby Woods and Alex James, centre Will Richards, prop Richard Jones and replacement Alex Rumsey, with second row Daniel Smith successfully taking on the kicking duties for an 83v20 lead. It appeared Kendal may finish on a high, and depart with a bonus point for a fourth try, when Mark Ireland intercepted a pass, after a quickly taken Luctonians penalty, but the referee brought play back, and it was Luctonians who finished the scoring with a third try for second row Smith, for a 90v20 final score. After a tough 2012, with just one win since Christmas, Kendal will be pleased to see the end of the season, but do finish with one positive statistic. They have the League's best discipline record with just 10 yellow cards from their 30 games. Elsewhere Harrogate paid the price for failing to find a fourth bonus point try at Mint Bridge last weekend, when a last minute Otley try, gave them a narrow one point victory away at Hull Ionians, to leave Harrogate in the final relegation berth, despite winning against fellow strugglers Leicester Lions Kendal 15 Kris Bratton 14 Ian Voortman 13 Alistair Thompson 12 Dave Barton [rep : Jordan Johnson] 11 Leo Mercer 10 Mark Ireland 9 Jamie Postlethwaite 1 Craig Rumney [rep : David Peacock] 2 Duncan Green 3 Richard Harryman 4 Danny Redhead [rep : Joshua Chaplow] 5 Reece Tomlinson 6 Liam Hayton 7 Mattie Houghton [rep : Dan Boardley] 8 Garry Holmes Luctonians 15 Will Hodnett [rep : Alex Rumsey] 14 John Morris [rep : Charles Meredith] 13 Will Richards 12 Alex James 11 Jimmy Norris 10 Will Burton 9 Brett Prior [rep : Sebastian Robinson-Hall] 1 Richard Jones 2 Chris Condliffe [rep : Jordan Street] 3 Robert Yeomans 4 Mike Cheasley [rep : Nathan Roy Smith] 5 Daniel Smith 6 Barnaby Woods 7 Ben James 8 Paul Hulland |
