KENDAL 23 – HUDDERSFIELD 8 Kendal finally completed their 3 North League fixtures on Saturday and finished with a victory against Huddersfield, making it eight out of eight against the Yorkshire side.
But as usual there was very little to choose between the two sides and after twenty minutes the game favoured Huddersfield. However the weather favoured no one during the game as it varied between sunny spells and some of the heaviest rain showers experienced by the large Mint Bridge crowds this season. Standoff Rob Aloe put the first points on the board for the home side in the third minute, however six minutes later and Huddersfield No.8 Nicholas Sharpe was powering his way over the try line to put the visitors in front by 3 – 5. With both sides struggling to adjust and adapt to the varying and extreme conditions it was Aloe who regained the lead for Kendal through his second penalty kick at goal in the twenty-fifth minute. Kendal extended that lead seven minutes later when centre & captain Ian Voortman stepped beautifully inside the defence on a skilful run to the line. Aloe was successful with the simple conversion to take Kendal into the second half holding a 13 -5 lead. That lead was extended still further after fifty-one minutes when flying wing Lewis Boyd was put clear on an arcing run to the line and leave him trailing the League’s leading try scorer, Gareth Collins, by one with nearly half an hour of the game left. Aloe was again successful with the conversion and for the first time it gave Kendal a commanding lead over Huddersfield. Matt Johnson kicked a penalty late in the game but it fell to Aloe to score the final points of the season when he kicked his third penalty of the afternoon nine minutes from the end. |
