KENDAL 28 – HULL IONIANS 13
Kendal quickly put behind them the disappointment of loosing to Loughborough Students when they hosted Hull Ionians on Bank Holiday Saturday.
A Rob Aloe penalty in the fifth minute gave Kendal an early lead however this was wiped out twelve minutes later when Hull were awarded a dubious try. Hull had built momentum and pressure in the Kendal twenty-two and as they fought close to the try line the ball seemed to roll forward but to most spectators amazement the try stood after left wing Tim Nixon touched the ball down. In a stop start first half Aloe kicked a second penalty for Kendal to give them a slender one point lead. Two minutes later and Aloe was heavily involved in creating Kendal’s opening try, he pinched the ball as Hull tried to force the play in their own half and second row Gareth Gore was on hand to take a good offload and score an unconverted try. Five minutes before halftime and Hull again reduced the deficit to a single point. The heavy Hull pack turned a Kendal scrum over and flanker Daniel Hague broke through a tackle to score Hull’s second try. Nine minutes into the second half it was Kendal who benefited when the referee again awarded a try which most spectators thought wasn’t. Kendal had won a penalty lineout deep in Hull territory and the ball was spun into midfield to centre Ian Voortman on the crash ball and he powered his way to within a few inches of the try line only to be the beneficiary of the referee’s decision. Aloe added the conversion to give Kendal an 18-10 lead. Both sides exchanged penalties midway through the second half and just when it looked like the game was going to peter out Kendal forced a turnover and the ball was shipped out to flying left winger Lewis Boyd who jetted off on a gliding run to the try line to finish the game off on a high. Aloe’s successful conversion was the final kick of the game. |
