KENDAL 31 – PRESTON GRASSHOPPERS 12

Kendal produced a sharp and slick performance in this eagerly awaited local derby game against old rivals Preston Grasshoppers, and grabbed the scoring opportunities they created to secure a five tries too two victory.

Kendal’s first try came straight from the kick-off, when Preston failed to secure the kick winger Zane Butler chasing hard won possession and Kendal wasted no time in swiftly moving the ball the width of the field to left wing Lewis Boyd who was tackled just short of the try line, but fullback Chris Park was in good support to finish the move off. Standoff Dan Stephens made a brilliant conversion from close to the touchline.

But that was the last of the ball Kendal saw for twenty minutes as Preston monopolised possession and created a couple of great scoring opportunities themselves however they never quite managed to finish them off.

A super tackle by centre Rob Aloe, making his home debut for Kendal, created turnover ball and in a flash Lewis Boyd was racing in to score in the corner for Stephens to once again make the touchline conversion and give the home side a 14 nil lead after twenty-five minutes.

Boyd scored a second try five minutes before halftime. The Kendal forwards had battered away at the Preston try line, going through several phases of play, before the ball was whipped along the back line for Boyd to streak in for an unconverted try.

Preston looked to have got their first points on the board a minute before halftime when scrumhalf Darren Wilson fought his way over the try line to somehow be dispossessed during the act of touching the ball down – summing up Preston’s half. So the scores remained 19 nil at half time.

Boyd completed his hat-trick two minutes into the second half. Kendal scrumhalf James Gough forced Preston to fluff a clearance kick which centre Ian Voortman caught with ease and gave a quick pass to his centre partner Aloe, who fed Boyd on a straight forward run to the try line and score the bonus point try. Stephens added the simple conversion.

Preston’s first points of game eventually came in sixty-fifth minute when their forwards managed to get a hold and put the Kendal try line under pressure for flanker Luke Cunningham to touch down wide out for a try which fullback Marcus Jackson converted.

Five minutes later, and from another turnover in midfield, Kendal were back on the attack. Aloe and Boyd exchanged neat passes – a feature of Kendal’s play throughout the game – to give Rob Aloe, showing some nifty footwork, his first try in Kendal’s colours. Stephens’s conversion attempt rebounded back off the post.

Preston scored a late consolation try to finish the game. Scrumhalf Darren Wilson showing good purpose and pose from a scrum ran in to score a much deserved try.
